Brainwaves

Week 10 – 22nd July

Below are the final homework tasks:

  1. Film yourself dancing to the track below:

2. If you haven’t done so already, film your short singing clips – one of yourself singing the ‘Counting’ song, one of the ‘Spiral’ song, and another singing the ‘Barry White’ song. You can find demonstration videos for these in the previous weeks’ homework below.

Please send your recordings to the WhatsApp group. If you aren’t part of the group, or need any help with any aspect of the homework, get in touch at ksbeveridge@gmail.com.

Week 9 – 15th July

Below are this week’s homework tasks:

  1. Watch the video below of Lucinda demonstrating the spiral dances.

2. Film two short clips – one of yourself doing a dance spiralling downwards (remember to think ‘eye of the storm’ as Lucinda said in the video) and another of yourself doing a dance spiralling backwards and then forwards. This is your dance, so you can be creative!

Here is a playlist of the tracks used in the sessions for you to dance to:

3. Watch each of the videos below, then film two short clips – one of yourself singing the ‘Counting’ song, and another singing the ‘Barry White’ song.

This is the voice memo app on iPhone:

On Android, you may need to download an application such as this one:

Week 6 – 24th June

This week, we would like you to use your phone camera to film a short clip (no more than two minutes) of yourself performing your spiral dance. There’s no need to do this along to music (unless you wish to!). Use the video clips below to give you tips on how to film the video. Once you have filmed your clip, send it to Jennie or the Brainwaves group via WhatsApp.

If you are not part of the WhatsApp group, or are struggling with any aspect of the filming, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Kirsten (ksbeveridge@gmail.com) or Jennie (jennierosettalife@gmail.com) and they will be happy to help you.

Please watch the short videos below, to give you more tips on how to film yourself at home.

Week 5 – 17th June

Please watch the short videos below, and practise the Spiral Song.

These short how-to vids were made with singing to the camera in mind, but since we are exploring the SPIRAL dance we are asking you to think ‘dance and movement’ whenever you hear singing and/or opera referred to in the videos.

Spiral spiral
Unknowing explore
The path ahead
Turn into the centre
Rest Here the fossil leaves it’s mark
Spiral the torso
Pause. tighten focus
Release the shot put
Look forwards Dream
Still

Spiral back to the centre
Follow the grooves
Play all the tunes on the LP
Let the needle still
Before

spiral
Unknowing explore
The path ahead
Each curve turns backwards
Before we step forwards
Look back!
Now look
Ahead and up!
How far we have come
Cor blimey!

This week we are inviting you to develop your own journey through movement exploring the spiral as an image. Your stories and ideas and movements were so rich in response we thought we would focus on them.  Here is a warm up exercise and an introduction to the spiral dance. Please take the ideas as prompts for your own journey and develop your own spiral dance.

The Spiral Dance

Here is a standing version of the dance:

The Standing Spiral Dance

Here is a sitting version:

The Sitting Spiral Dance

Please practice these and begin to develop your own movement in response to these ideas.
Do not worry about filming or recording yourself at this point.  This is a creative exercise to develop your own movement response to the idea of the spiral.

Jawad’s Wisteria Spiral Dance

Pauline’s Spiralling Hand Dance

Week 1 – 20th May

Here are lyrics from the warm up activity.

AND IF I RISE
LET ME RISE
LIKE A BIRD
JOYFULLY
🦅

AND IF I FALL
LET ME FALL
LIKE A LEAF
GRACEFULLY 🍁
WITHOUT REGRET
